Denarius struck in 67 BC under the moneyer, Calpurnius Piso Frugi; identified with Cicero’s son-in-law. Both sides of this coin refer to the Ludi Apollinares, the Roman games held in honour of Apollo, which involved horse racing as a central feature.
According to Livy the Praetor C. Calpurnius Piso proposed that these games should be an annual event in 211 BC and subsequent moneyers of the Piso family (notably L. Calpurnius Piso Frugi and C. Calpurnius Piso Frugi) struck coins in honouring the event.
67 BC was also notable for Pompey the Great’s war against the pirates of the Mediterranean.
