A diminutive 1/10th Stater from Kyrene, of good weight and a good level of detail remaining despite evident circulation wear.
The city of Kyrene allied itself with Alexander the Great at the turn on 332 BC and from that point struck a series of gold issues of varying denominations including this tenth of a stater featuring Apollo Karneios on the obverse and a female head, thought to be the nymph Kyrene, on the reverse.
Kyrene was a nymph favoured by Apollo for wrestling a lion, after whom the City of Kyrene was named.
