Roman Imperial, Marcus Aurelius, Silver Denarius – AD 179

£135.00

Emperor from AD 161-180, Marcus Aurelius is depicted on this denarius in the final year of his life. The reverse portrays Mars, holding a spear and shield.

The last of the ‘Five good Emperors’, Marcus is remembered for an age of relative peace and prosperity within the Empire’s borders (despite near permanent conflict with Rome’s neighbouring rivals) and also for his reputation as a Stoic Philosopher.
