Roman Imperatorial, Marc Antony, Legionary Denarius LEG XIIII, 32-31 BC

£140.00

An iconic coin of the Imperatorial period in Rome’s history, ‘Legionary’ denarii were issued by Marc Antony in the eastern Mediterranean from 32 to 31 BC, as he prepared his forces to face Octavian at the Battle of Actium.

These coins were struck in large numbers to pay Antony’s legions and they are often well-worn as they remained in general circulation well into the Imperial period (even appearing in 3rd century AD hoards).

This is a scarce example which honours Antony’s 14th Legion and uses the XIIII numeral.

Worn, surface marks, Fine.
