Kingdom of Cappadocia, Ariobarzanes I Philoromaios Silver Drachm

£85.00

An extremely fine silver drachm of Ariobarzanes I Philoromaios of Cappadocia with an exceptional portrait.

Ariobarzanes was the first Hellenistic king to take the epithet ‘philoromaios’ (friend to the Romans).

The move was pragmatic as it very publicly demonstrated the powerful protectorship of Rome at a time when neighbouring Pontus had designs on dominating the whole of Asia minor and driving Roman influence from the region.

Superb portrait, Extremely Fine.
