Illyria, Dyrrhachion, Silver Drachm, after 229 BC

£60.00

An Illyrian silver drachm from Dyrrhachion, struck under the Magistrates Alkaios and Aristomenos.

The obverse names Alkaios and depicts a cow and suckling calf, with plough in exeurge. The obverse names Aristomenos around the classic double stellate pattern associated with these coins.

This distinctive pattern is thought to represent the garden of mythological King Alkinous, encountered most prominently in the Odyssey.
