Roman Imperial, Caracalla, Silver Denarius, AD 199-200 – Superb Portrait

£125.00

A denarius showing a young Caracalla, struck in AD199-200.

The obverse holds a superb portrait of Caracalla, laureate and draped, whilst the reverse has a pleasing depiction of Sol holding an orb and spear.

At the time of this portrait, the twelve year old Caracalla had recently been made co-emperor and held the titles of Augustus, and Pontifex Maximus, which had been awarded to him in 198 by his father, the Emperor Septimius Severus. These titles are evident on the coin’s legends; ANTONINVS AVGVSTVS / PONTIF TR P III (the TR P III indicating the third year of holding Tribunician authority).

A well-centred and very attractive example.
